I'll be the first to admit that Pitchfork and I disagree on quite a bit (except for their latest review of A Weekend In The City by Bloc Party, well done Pitchfork) but while scanning their best albums of 2006 list, I found a band that kept coming up time and time again in several publications top 10s. Pitchfork described them as a Strokes coolness to a superb pop-rock record from a band that used to specialize in synth and electronics.
The band was Phoenix, and I had become very curious. I checked it out at my local record shop where it was a measly $9.99. Solid pickup? No doubt.
The album is fantastic. I'd describe it as a cross between Strokes (earlier, not recent) in regards to the straight forward, no gimmick rock. But also add in the warm lush sounds of Ambulance LTD, some nostalgia from the 80's and some borrowed indie-alternative swagger from bands such as TV on The Radio (check out Long Distance Call verses).
If you're looking for a deserving new CD to add to your collection, then look into Phoenix - It's Never Been Like That.

Also head over to www.myspace.com/wearephoenix for two other songs from their album along with Too Young, from their previous synth album days. Good listen.
